CALL for fair environmental competition
The call below is largely reconciliatory, as are its supporters (list at the bottom of the page) :
– Academics, statisticians and leading scientists such as Jean Jouzel and Sandra Lavorel, CNRS gold medallists in 2002 and 2023 ;
– Producers, with the Association of Financial Directors and Management Controllers, the Institut de l’Iconomie, entrepreneurs, financiers and consultants ;
– Citizens, through Pacte Civique, Amis du Compte Climat, Allocation Climat, Carbon On Invoices, Club des vigilants and Réconcilions-nous!
More and more of us want to decarbonise and to reduce “carbon”, i.e. the greenhouse gases going into the atmosphere each year (measured in CO2 equivalents). Decarbonisation brings us together, even if we each have our own reasons: to be less dependent on the rising cost of carbon, to limit climate, water and biodiversity imbalances, to reduce the burden on future generations.
A fair environmental competition between products and between investments, based on reliable environmental performance, would continuously improve this performance while leaving everyone free to make their own choices.
This is made possible by the environmental accounting measure described on the carbones-factures.org website. It gives a company its essential environmental performance: the carbon footprint of the company and its products and its annual contribution to collective decarbonisation. The company passes this information on to its partners on its invoices and accounts, to help them manage their own performance. The accountant of an SME can do this easily with a short tutorial and a calculator fed with a dozen simple questions each year.
Environmental competition helps us to reconcile money, a purely human value, and environmental balance, a value shared by all living things.
It is now up to each and every one of us to ensure that as many companies, banks and public authorities as possible experiment with and share environmental accounting measure.
As customers, savers/investors or voters, we can ask our partners, “When will you tell me about your essential environmental performance?” This triggers environmental competition and also encourages us to revisit our consumption and savings habits.
As an employee, consultant, manager or shareholder of an organisation, we can help our organisation to manage and communicate its essential environmental performance to its partners. In doing so, it gains in competitiveness and reputation.
We are particularly appealing to elected representatives of all parties : environmental competition will save public money by monitoring both money efficiency and carbon efficiency; public debates will be clarified by the consequences of decisions in these two dimensions. Elected representatives and their departments have an essential role to play in facilitating the deployment of environmental accounting measure; in helping small businesses to manage their essential environmental performance; in building up the associated statistics; in monitoring imports of sensitive products, particularly fossil fuels: checking that their accounting measures is appropriate or imposing the display of a conservative performance.
